Getting Started in Rogue Blight
Tutorial grave to first Waywood Forest boss, without wasting gold or Funguy.
Rogue Blight is a 2D souls-like rogue-lite that launched on Steam on 3 September 2026 for Windows, macOS, and Linux. This page is a first-hour plan for the full release, written from official Steam information, the demo still listed as app 2336830, and public footage. It is not a spoiler novel and it is not a complete item encyclopedia. If a number is not on a tooltip in footage or in Steam copy, it is not invented here.
The game is $12.99 at launch with an intro discount through 17 September 2026. Steam reports Very Positive reviews and 94 achievements. Full controller support is listed. Read controls if you care about mouse-aimed swings before you take a real hit; stay here if you want the run order.
Before you leave the tutorial
The game opens at a grave-like sanctuary and walks you through the souls loop before it lets you touch a real map. Complete that lesson. You will see a basic attack that spends stamina, a dodge with invincibility frames, a jump you can tap or hold for extra height, air attacks, a potion drink, and two weapon skills (left hand and right hand). Skills spend mana. Mouse position aims both swings and skills, which is easy to miss if you treat this like a locked side-scroller.
Then customize the rogue. Footage of the creator shows hairstyles, presets, and a randomize option. Looks do not change damage. Armor you pick up later shows on the body, which is why the look screen exists: helmet, chest, arms, pants, and boots will actually appear on the character you walk into Waywood Forest.
When the tutorial dumps you onto the first map, treat every enemy as a short exam. Combat explains why even a forest trash mob fights like a mini-boss. Do not skip the skill prompts; left and right skills are half of your build.
Character look and the first loadout
Every weapon is one-handed. Early footage starts most players on a wooden sword: physical plus poison, Strength +1, and a Berserk skill (fifteen seconds; footage showed +25% damage). That is a teaching blade, not a forever weapon. As permanent upgrades unlock, the start-of-run picker can offer a wooden wand or daggers as well.
You also pick a minor blessing at the start of a map in public builds. Take something that matches how you already fight. A second-life blessing is wasted if you still panic-roll into the first slam. A forge-point blessing is wasted if you never visit a blacksmith.
You will find iron swords (Rising Slash), a parrying dagger (deflect to stagger), and dual-dagger skills such as Dashing Thrust in the forest loot table. Those names are launch-week examples from footage. Steam’s live pool is 50+ unique weapons across swords, daggers, wands, and shields. Pairing rules live on weapons and builds.
Reading the first map
Waywood Forest is a Slay the Spire-style node graph. A path you skip is gone. Typical icons from Steam and the demo:
- Enemy. A one-on-one fight, sometimes an elite. Gold, gear, and experience live here.
- Unknown / event. A choice node. Public footage showed health and mana restores, random blessings, and Funguy gambits.
- Chest. Blessings that rewrite the run.
- Shop. Weapons, gear, and blessings for gold.
- Statue. Pray for a health, mana, or stamina boost.
- Bonfire. Restore resources. These often sit near a boss gate.
- Blacksmith. Smelt spare gear to upgrade what you actually wear.
- Boss. The chapter closer.
Wendigo is the documented chapter 1 and demo final. Gorilla appears as an early story boss. Full icon behavior sits on map encounters. A first-run route that stacks one statue, one chest, and a blacksmith before the boss is usually kinder than a pure fight highway. The walkthrough covers the three-chapter path once you leave the forest.
When to shop versus fight
Fight when you still have potions and a punish pattern. Shop when your weapon skill does not match the next elite, or when both hands are empty of a plan. Gold is also the between-run currency, so emptying the purse on a random shop blessing can starve the sanctuary upgrades that make run two easier.
A practical launch-week heuristic from demo footage:
- Take the extra fight if the path also has a chest or statue.
- Take the shop if you are holding junk you will smelt anyway and you need a left-hand skill.
- Always visit a blacksmith before a boss if you have spare pieces. Upgraded poise and damage matter more than a full backpack.
- Do not skip every unknown node. Events are how you refill potions without a bonfire.
If two paths look equal, pick the one that feeds your current pair. A Strength sword wants statue health or blacksmith points more than a random wand. A wand wants mana statue and a chest that might drop a mana blessing.
Potions, stamina, and the X swap
You carry a health potion and a mana potion. Press X to swap which flask is active, then drink. Skills and some parries spend mana; swings and dodges spend stamina. Running dry of stamina in front of a three-hit combo is how first hours end. Drink health after a punish window, not during the enemy wind-up. Drink mana before you need the skill, especially Berserk or a dash-thrust opener.
Bonfires and some events refill flasks. Do not assume a shop always sells potions. If you are walking into a boss with one flask type empty, you already lost the node-routing game, even if your weapons look fancy.
Death, gold, and Funguy
Death ends the run. You keep permanent progress bought in the sanctuary between attempts. Two wallets show up in footage and Steam copy: gold and Funguy (the mushroom currency). Gold tends to fund shops and broad unlocks. Funguy shows up on meta vendors — demo players spent it on extra weapon slots and similar account options. Official materials describe about 20 unique upgrades that expand shops and future-run options. Leveling during a run also unlocks more weapons, gear, and blessings for later loot tables.
You cannot open the full equipment screen in the middle of a fight. Decide your pair at the node, then commit. After a death, spend on the upgrade that removes a first-hour frustration (shop stock, an extra slot, or a starting weapon) instead of a vanity node.
A practical first-run plan
- Finish the tutorial without skipping skill prompts.
- Start Waywood Forest on the wooden sword unless you already unlocked another starter.
- Path toward a chest and a statue before the first elite if the graph allows it.
- Smelt duplicate armor at the first blacksmith. Wear the piece that actually boosts Strength, Dexterity, or Intelligence for your pair. Footage described Strength as damage, Intelligence as mana and elemental damage, and Dexterity as crit chance plus stamina recovery.
- Keep one potion of each type for the boss. Wendigo is a pattern fight, not a DPS race.
- After a death, buy the sanctuary upgrade that makes the next map less stingy, then try a different node line.
The demo remains a useful mechanical gym even after you own the full game. Demo copy listed a level 25 cap and only the first map. Stamina timing, potion swap, and dual-wield rules still match. When you are ready for Fireworn City and Blight Castle, use the walkthrough. When you want ranked pairing instead of first-hour routing, open weapons and builds and the weapons tier list.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
Should I skip the Rogue Blight tutorial?
No. It teaches stamina attacks, dodge invincibility, jump height, potion drinking, and both weapon skills. Mouse aim is easy to miss if you skip prompts. See controls.
What happens when I die?
The run ends. Gold and Funguy spent in the sanctuary stay. Unspent run loot does not. Buy upgrades that widen shops or starting weapons before you retry Waywood Forest.
What is the difference between gold and Funguy?
Gold buys shop stock during a run and funds many account unlocks. Funguy is the mushroom currency demo players spent on extra slots and similar meta options. Official copy describes about 20 unique upgrades between runs.
When should I visit a shop instead of fighting?
Shop when your pair has no answer for the next elite or you need a left-hand skill. Fight when potions and a punish pattern are still intact. Node types are listed on map encounters.
Who is the first chapter boss?
Wendigo is the documented Waywood Forest / demo closer. Gorilla appears as an early story boss. Tells and arena notes live on bosses and the walkthrough.
Is the demo worth launching after I bought the full game?
As a stamina gym, yes. The demo is still on Steam (app 2336830) and covers Waywood Forest with a documented level cap. Official store links live on the links hub. The full game adds two more chapters and infinite New Game+.
