Rogue Blight Map Encounters

Node legend and launch-week routing for Waywood Forest, Fireworn City, and Blight Castle.

Map Encounters

Rogue Blight’s maps are a branching node graph in the Slay the Spire tradition, not a Metroidvania overworld. Steam’s map-progression list is the official node set: random encounters, chests full of blessings, a shop for weapons, gear, and blessings, a statue that boosts health, mana, or stamina, a blacksmith that smelts spare gear into upgrades, plus combat and bosses. This tool names every node type we can document, then gives launch-week routing for a first clear. Chapter order and boss names live on the walkthrough. First-hour habits live on getting started.

Three story maps roll unique enemies and backgrounds: Waywood Forest, Fireworn City, Blight Castle. Infinite New Game+ reuses that structure with higher enemy damage, speed, health, size, and status apply rate. Challenge Maps are separate: one attempt, unique layouts, curses, and modifiers (the developer example set included lightning on the player and 50% larger enemies).

The official site, during development, estimated about 30 unknown “?” events and about 20 unique upgrades that expand later options (upgrading the shop so more items appear was the example). Those upgrades are meta / sanctuary purchases with Funguy, not in-run nodes. Gold is the in-map currency for the shop. Spare gear is blacksmith food.

Node types

Enemy

A fight against the chapter’s regular roster. This is gold, drops, and practice for combat. Take enemy nodes when your potions, stamina, and status plan can afford a mistake. Skip extra enemy branches when you are already one-shot range or when a statue / bonfire / blacksmith sits on the other path. New Game+ size and speed make “one more fight” a real tax.

Unknown / event (“?”)

A random encounter with a choice and possibly a unique reward. Steam calls these out separately from chests. The no-hit challenge winner’s NPC was promised for the “?” area in the full release, which tells you events can include named characters, not just stat dice. Typical footage choices: heal and mana versus a random blessing; Funguy-related options; risks that apply a downside. Official screenshots also show a Steal prompt (one example: steal 1 item at 90% or leave quietly) while a blighted creature sleeps over a glowing cache — high reward if the roll hits, a fight if it fails.

Routing: take unknown when your HP can survive a bad roll, or when you specifically need a blessing and the chest path is blocked. Skip unknown when a bonfire or statue would save the run more honestly. Challenge Maps with extra curses make unknown nodes even swingier — one attempt means a brick event can end the whole try.

Chest (blessings)

Steam: chests are full of blessings, not a generic loot piñata. This is where Second Life, thorns, forge packets, and the rest of the blessings tier list come from. Routing: path a chest before a boss if you have no save-me relic. Path a chest after a shop if you already spent gold on a weapon family and now need the relic that makes the family work. Do not skip every chest to “save time”; blessings are the rogue-lite half of the game.

Shop

Buy weapons, gear, and blessings with gold. This is how you finish a dual-dagger pair or pick up a left-hand shield. Meta shop upgrades (the “more items become available” example) change later runs, not the current node’s rules. Routing: enter a shop when you have gold and a missing hand. Skip shop when you are broke and a blacksmith would turn junk into a +1. Do not buy a third status weapon that fights your two-status plan — see status effects.

Statue

Pray to boost health, mana, or stamina. Playtest-era achievements already tracked praying 50 times, so this is a core loop, not flavor. Routing: statue early if one resource is clearly the bottleneck (mana for wands, stamina for daggers, health for sword-and-shield learners). Statue later if you already have Second Life and potions. On New Game+, health statues climb in value because enemy damage climbs.

Bonfire

Rest, potion management, and a meta upgrade target (playtest achievements included fully upgrading the bonfire and visiting it 50 times). Demo patch notes even fixed a “Refill Potions” button that could disable when potions were already full — the bonfire is where that button lives. Routing: sit before a boss. Sit after a hard unknown. Skipping the last bonfire to grab one more enemy node is how first clears die. Challenge Maps: if a bonfire exists on a one-attempt layout, it is probably the whole plan.

Blacksmith

Smelt spare gear to upgrade equipment. Novice tunics, duplicate weapons, and wooden starters are fuel. Footage showed +1 fire swords coming off the anvil. A known blessing grants +10 forge points and is destroyed when you visit the blacksmith — only pick that relic if a smith is still on the route. Routing: visit once your inventory is clutter. Visiting twice is fine if the map offers two smiths and you found more junk. Do not walk into the chapter boss with four unsmelted armors and a wooden wand.

Boss

The map’s gated fight. Story bosses include Gorilla, Wendigo, Statue Dweller, Illdrake Knight, Royal Rotter, Blight Lady, and The Blight among a larger roster (about 17 story bosses in our facts file). Routing: arrive with potions, a blessing plan, and a pair you have already swung in an enemy node. Details, tells, and chapter order belong on the walkthrough and bosses pages, not in this legend.

Launch-week routing rules

  1. Waywood Forest first clear: statue or shop early, chest before the boss, bonfire immediately before the boss, blacksmith if you have starter junk. Unknown is optional.
  2. Fireworn City: you should already know whether you are a mana build or a stamina build. Statue that resource. Shop for the matching family. Do not greed every enemy node; city bosses hit harder.
  3. Blight Castle: treat every node as New Game+ practice. Prefer bonfire and chest over extra enemies. Unknown only if you can afford a curse.
  4. Always: gold is for the shop, junk is for the blacksmith, Funguy is for the sanctuary between maps. Do not mix those three up at a node prompt.
  5. Challenge Maps: one attempt. Path as if every enemy is optional and every rest is mandatory. If the modifier is “enemies 50% bigger,” wands and swords beat dual daggers unless you already no-hit the demo.

Demo history taught two map lessons worth keeping: patch 1.14 (5 February 2025) stopped path generation from skewing heavily right, so do not assume the right-hand branch is always longer; and the demo told players that leaderboards lived to the left of the grave in the hub. The full game still uses a sanctuary / grave hub between runs — rest there, spend Funguy, then pick the next map.

If two paths look equal, take the one that includes blacksmith + bonfire over enemy + unknown. Power in this game comes from upgraded gear and a blessing, not from one extra trash fight. When the graph hides both, take the shop if you have gold, the statue if you do not, and fight the boss anyway — that is the souls half of the rogue-lite.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

What does each map icon mean?

Enemy is a fight. Unknown is a random event with a choice. Chest gives blessings. Shop sells weapons, gear, and blessings. Statue boosts health, mana, or stamina. Bonfire rests and refills. Blacksmith smelts spare gear. Boss ends the map.

Should I always take unknown events?

No. They can reward unique loot or brick a run. Take them when your HP can survive a bad roll. First clears should prefer statue, shop, chest, and bonfire. See getting started.

Is the blacksmith required?

Not required, but starter weapons and novice armor are meant to be smelted. A +1 on the pair you actually swing beats a full backpack. Path a smith when the inventory is junk.

Do Challenge Maps use the same nodes?

They use the same vocabulary with unique layouts, curses, and modifiers, and you get **one attempt**. Route like a tournament: rest and blessings over extra enemies.

Where is the chapter-by-chapter path?

On the walkthrough. This page is the node legend and general routing, not a boss-by-boss script.

What currency do I spend on the map?

Gold in the shop. Spare gear at the blacksmith. Funguy (fungus) is the between-run meta currency in the sanctuary, not something you usually dump on a single node.
